I‘m super excited to share this week’s Destination Desserts with you!  To say that Big Gay Ice Cream has quite a following in New York City is an understatement.  With a menu filled with playful soft serve ice cream cones, shakes, floats and sundaes, their truck is nostalgic of the ice cream trucks from your childhood but with a new aged flavor twist.  Founders Douglass Quint and Bryan Petroff started their franchise with an ice cream truck during the summer of 2009.  They had a simple goal of sharing their treats with a smile and giving the people of New York a bit of happiness.  Before they knew it, their inventive flavors like Salty Pimp, Cococone, Mermaid and Gobbler made them a huge success.  There is no wonder that today, Big Gay Ice Cream now has added two store fronts and has been featured everywhere from Rachel Ray to Food Network and the Cooking Channel.  To learn more about this groundbreaking truck, check out my interview below.

What did you do before you started your food truck business?

Doug was a working musician, who was looking for a fun summer job, and Bryan was working in corporate training/meeting and events planning. We decided to work on the ice cream truck together.

What sets your food truck apart?
The thing that sets Big Gay Ice Cream apart, especially from other ice cream trucks, is the humor and fun we bring to both the customers and the ice cream. We pair classic soft serve ice cream with fun and unexpected toppings.

What ingredient can’t you live without?
Salt. The salty/sweet combination is one of our favorites and is featured in many of our menu items.

What is your best seller and why?
The Salty Pimp is by far the best seller. It’s a vanilla cone that we coat and inject with dulce de leche, sprinkle with sea salt, and then dip into chocolate. It comes back to that great salty/sweet combination.

What is next for your food truck?
In addition to keeping the truck rolling, we have expanded our business to include two brick and mortar shops in NYC, the second of which we just opened up in the West Village.
