Destination Desserts: Kickass Cupcakes Boston

I love when a reader refers an amazing food truck to me.   A good friend of mine highly recommended that I feature Kickass Cupcakes in Boston, and I jumped at the chance.  Learning about the owner and pastry chef Sara Ross and her super cool cupcake van was a lot of fun.  I can see why Boston residents can't get enough of her delicacies.  With a menu that includes fried cupcakes and flavors like raspberry truffle and lemon drop, I would not be able to get enough either.  To learn more about Kickass Cupcakes, check out our interview below.

What ingredient can't you live without?

Butter is the yellow brick road to happiness!

Where is the oddest place or event you have ever had to sell at?
We were invited to vend at a local music festival being held at a boat house, and it took some tricky maneuvering to park.  I held my breath hoping that the truck was not going to back into the Charles River.

What are the new trends in desserts?  Have you started any of them?
We started holding "Cocktail Cupcake Happy Hours" at the shop when we first opened.   I would like to think I started the trend of cocktail themed cupcakes. Another new trend is incorporating savory elements, like bacon, into cupcakes, which we have done quite deliciously I think with our 'Chocolate Oink" cupcake. I also created a chocolate foie gras cupcake that was insanely good. The trend of making a savory cupcake, like a cupcake that contains meatloaf instead of cake and is topped with mashed potatoes instead of frosting, is something I am seriously considering adding to the truck's menu for the winter.

What famous person would you love to have order from your truck and why?   What menu item do you think they would order and why?
I would die if Anthony Bourdain ever came to the cupcake truck because he is truly a kickass chef and inspiration. If we still had the foie gras cupcake on the menu, I'm sure that's what he would order.

Describe your food truck using only dessert terms?
Maximum cupcake satisfaction, no fork required.
